A homoeopathic paediatrician, a counselling expert and a freelance writer are a few words to describe my profession. My sole aim is to put forth practical piece of information that guides every one right in the direction, blending the medicos to a layman with a simple gesture to make the medical things a little less convoluted and comprehendible.
Conjunctivitis is an infection of eyes and is a very painful and disturbing experience. It lasts for around a week and has its phases of peaking and reducing. The infection of conjunctivitis feels like the pricking of sand or some thorn. The eyes turn red and are constantly watery. Conjunctivitis can be of different types. One type of conjunctivitis is a contagious disease and when someone comes in contact with the eye fluid that constantly runs down the eyes during this infection, he too can get infected. This also depends on immunity of the person though. Even the intensity of infection differs from person to person and some may get severely affected while some only feels slight irritation and redness.
Since the symptoms of conjunctivitis wanes off on its own after a week, there are no as such medications recommended for its cure. Only eye drops, to wash off the infection and keep the eyes moist are prescribed most of the times. Along with the medical prescriptions, some home remedies too can be tried out to combat or lessen the effect of conjunctivitis.
- · The most common trouble in this disease is that eyes keeps on itching and hurting constantly. So as to reduce the itching feeling put a cool wet cloth against the infected eye. This will relieve you from the itching feeling. This can be tried several times in a day as long as the infection persists.
- · Ice Pack too is very helpful in reducing the inflammation or swelling of the eyes. But it should be applied for longer duration. Apply ice pack on the eyelid in such a way that the swollen eye area is covered properly. This is also important because if Cornea does not get proper moisture during conjunctivitis it can dry out and create another problem for eyes. Ice pack when applied regularly gives moisture to the cornea and also reduces inflammation. This technique has been found to be highly effective in reducing the symptoms of conjunctivitis like redness and swelling.
- · In case of severe infection of conjunctivitis, warm heat compresses too have been found to be very beneficial. Since this eye infection is of bacterial type, heat compresses increase the temperature of the eye area above the temperature conducive for bacterial growth thereby resulting in decrease in the infection problem. Heat compresses also helps in the blood dilation process due to which the eye vessels get ample blood supply.
- · Do not use share towel or napkin with anyone else, as someone else can get infected. The best way to reduce the spread of this infection is by keeping isolated from touch as much possible so that the whole family and friends are saved from the pain of conjunctivitis.
- · Do not regularly touch or press eyes as it can further aggravate the irritation, causing damage to the internal eye. Also keeping hands away from eyes can help restrain the spread of conjunctivitis germs.
- · Always keep your eyes shielded from direct sunlight or harmful chemicals by using goggles. Also avoid swimming as chlorine water can be harmful to eyes during the infection.
