How to overcome motion sickness?

Adventure and travelling goes hand in hand and it is indeed thrilling to visit different places on holidays for sight seeing or even for paying a visit to some near relations. Just as people are afraid of heights and feel dizziness when they look down, similarly many people suffer from motion sickness and hence for them such a travel is more like a nightmare than fun and all the excitement and gripping stimulation is just lost. So what to do? Should such people stop travelling entirely or are there some measures and precautions which can aid to make the travel of such a people equally enjoyable like normal persons. Let’s find out.

If you already know that you are prone to suffer from motion sickness the best thing is to opt for some preventive measures. Some of them are discussed here:

  • People suffering from motion sickness should try to sit near the window as this will help them to concentrate on the actual motion and speed their body is experiencing. This can help to curb the sickness. 
  • Such people should avoid reading a book or even working on computer during the travelling. Else, it’s always advisable to look outside and target some distant place for looking out. When you will be working on computer or reading a book, you will feel the motion to be increasing or rapid whereas when you are already concentrating on a stable object like horizon outside the window you will not feel the effect of motion or speed.  
  • For some people eating wrong food before boarding a flight or train can cause motion sickness. Hence whenever you intend to travel, think before you eat. Try to find out which food had upset your stomach during the last travel. Most probably, the oily, spicy and fat dense foot upset your abdomen and bowel movements due to which motion sickness occurs.
  •   Some drinks or snacks if munched or drunk during travel help to curb the instinct of motion sickness. Many people find it helpful to eat salty crackers and similar snacks during travelling as this check the motion sickness problem. Drinking mild carbonated drinks have been found to be helpful in controlling this problem. Instead of going for the regular caffeinated carbonated drinks, you should choose drinks like ginger ale or lemon soda.
  •   Some medications too can be taken before getting on board. The most recommended medication for motion sickness is antihistamine. So as to get maximum benefit of this medicine, it should be taken at least an hour before the travel. This is a common medicine and is very helpful in controlling motion sickness.
  • Another popular medication is scopolamine.   This medication is for topical application and is nothing but a patch which should be kept in contact with your skin at least an hour before you start travelling so that the medication gets absorbed inside the body.
  • Cognitive therapy has been recommended by some doctors for motion sickness but it takes lot of time and the results have not been very convincing.
